When Radhika first reached out to me, she wasn’t asking for help choosing a sofa or finding the perfect rug.
She wrote: “I am looking for a thoughtful, warm collaborator to design my first apartment in NYC. I want this space to feel like my dream home (cozy, warm, earthy, bright) and need some help bringing that vision to life. I have always lived with family, so this is my first opportunity to create a home I love.”
I remember reading that email and immediately thinking, this project is about so much more than furniture.
She wasn’t looking for someone to make her apartment prettier. She was looking for someone to help her create a home that finally felt like her own.

Her apartment before
During our discovery call, she said something I’ll never forget.
She looked around her living room and said it felt boring and blank.
Then she laughed and added: “And I’m not boring and blank!”
That sentence stayed with me throughout the entire project.
Because that’s exactly what good interior design should do.
It shouldn’t simply create a beautiful room.
It should create a home that reflects the person living in it.
When I read through her questionnaire, I kept seeing the same ideas come up over and over again.
She wrote that her apartment didn’t feel “warm, cozy or reflective of who I am.”
She wondered whether she needed a rug to bring everything together, but when you kept reading, it became clear that the rug wasn’t really what she was worried about.
She wrote about not knowing where to put her books, even though they were incredibly important to her.
She wanted plants and flowers throughout the apartment because she wanted the space to feel alive.
She explained that she had been working from her living room every day, and that it had started to feel like she lived where she worked instead of the other way around.
And then she wrote one sentence that perfectly summarized everything she was looking for: “I want my apartment to feel like a calm, cozy and inspiring haven that has my name written all over it.”
I honestly couldn’t have said it better myself.

Her apartment before
One of my favorite questions in my questionnaire is: “How do you want your home to make you feel?”
Because that’s where the design process really begins.
Radhika’s answer wasn’t “modern” or “mid-century” or “quiet luxury.”
She said she wanted to feel calm, grounded and peaceful.
She wanted to feel “centered, rooted, unfazed by the chaos of the world.”
She also wanted her home to feel playful and inspiring, because those were the parts of herself she wanted her apartment to bring out.
Those answers shaped every decision we made.

Her apartment after the transformation!!
So yes, we changed the furniture.
Yes, we added colour, texture, artwork and a much more functional layout.
We swapped the sofa, found a better place for her books, brought in greenery, and made sure work no longer took over her living room.

Her apartment after the transformation!!
But those were never the goal.
They were simply the tools that helped us create a home with her name written all over it.
Because that’s what interior design is.
It’s not about creating a beautiful room.
It’s about creating a home that supports your everyday life and reflects the person living in it.
Because when your home reflects who you are, something shifts.
You feel more grounded.
More peaceful.
More inspired.
More like yourself.
And that’s always the kind of transformation I’m trying to create.
